The Senate is working on a bill seeking the establishment of an endowment fund for Arts and Literature, sponsored by Senator Shehu Sani.
Sani, who is representing Kaduna Central senatorial district had sponsored a bill tagged; National Endowment for Arts, Literature (2015).
The bill was passed through the first reading during yesterday’s plenary.
Giving insight into the bill, Sani said the bill when passed would revolutionise the arts and literary sectors in the country.
“This is a very good aspect of our nation that has been neglected. The endowment fund, when established will avail authors, artists and literary gurus, the opportunity to fund their works.
“The sole aim of the bill is to support new generation of Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka in the country. Many young authors and artists possess the literary skills to excel in the world but their set back is funding and the bill addresses this,” he said.
According to him, the bill will also assist lecturers in the various higher institutions in the country to fund their thesis and other research works.
