As Kogi and Bayelsa prepare to conduct gubernatorial elections, the U.S. has called on Nigerians to refrain from advocating, fomenting, or condoning violence before, during, or after the elections.
This is contained in a statement by Public Affairs Section, U.S. Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.
The embassy reiterated U.S. commitment to working with Nigeria to strengthen its democratic institutions in the years ahead.
It called on the political parties and leaders to work towards sustaining stability of democracy in Nigeria.
“The Nigerian Constitution itself states that it is the duty of every citizen to respect the dignity of other citizens and the rights and legitimate interests of citizens to live in unity and harmony.
“Political parties, elected leaders and candidates for offices have a special obligation to uphold these democratic precepts,” it stated. (NAN)
