Election Petition: Tribunal Decides El-Rufai’s Fate Soon

The Kaduna Governorship Election Petition Tribunal will soon deliver judgement in a case challenging the election of Governor Nasir el-Rufai.

Mr. Polycarp Danladi of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), is before the tribunal challenging the return of el-Rufai, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as the winner of the April 2015 governorship election. He contended that the election was conducted without compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

Among other things, Danladi alleged that there were cases of over-voting, exclusion of results for APGA, in some council areas, and that in some cases, the number of accredited voters was more than number of those who voted.

In all, he is challenging election results in 14 out of the 23 councils in the state.

Meanwhile, the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has commended the 19 northern governors on the resolution to tackle insurgency, poverty and illiteracy as a step to repositioning the region to regain its lost glory. This was contained in a communique issued at the end of the NUJ state monthly council congress which was signed by the Secretary of the council, Mr. Dominic Uzu. Recall that the northern governors had last Friday in Kaduna held a meeting where they resolved to tackle headlong the social vices threatening the zone, instead of continuous lamentation over the issues.

“The council lauds the Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) on its resolve to end insurgency, tackle poverty, illiteracy as well as reposition the north. The congress equally urged Governor Shettima to consolidate on the success achieved during the last meeting held in Kaduna

“That Borno governor, and chairman of NSGF, Kashim Shettima be commended for his magnanimity and warm reception accorded journalists during the 19 Northern States Governors forum meeting held in Kaduna recently and directed that a letter of commendation be written acknowledging the kind gesture, “ the communique read in part.
