Six medical doctors and members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) have been confirmed dead.
The doctors who were delegates from Ekiti state were on their way to Sokoto state for the Annual General Meeting/annual delegates meeting of the association when they met their untimely death along the Abuja-Kaduna express way.
In a statement made available to reporters and signed by the national president and secretary general, Dr. Kayode Obembe and Dr Akinwumi Alayaki respectively, the association said other members of the delegates who survived the accident are in stable condition and are receiving medical attention under the auspices of the chairman of the Kaduna state NMA and his team.
It revealed that the affected members are Dr. Alex Akinyele, NMA secretary, Ekiti state chapter, Dr. Tunde Aladesanmi, General Surgeon, Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti, Dr. O.J. Taiwo, Anatomic Pathologist, Ekiti state University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti.
Others are Dr. Ogunseye J.B, of the National Association of General and Government Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP) and national secretary, Hospital Management Board, Ekiti, Dr. Olajide .O, Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), EKSUTH President, Dr. Atolani Adeniyi, Secretary NAGGMDP, Ekiti State and Mr. Ajibola, NMA Ekiti driver.
While praying for the souls of the departed eternal rest, the association has directed that “all doctors should observe one week of mourning from Tuesday 26th to Tuesday 3rd of May, 2016.
Every doctor should put on black band on the left arm over white overall.”
While the conference continues,”The bereaved families have been contacted and arrangements are in motion to convey the bodies back to Ekiti state.”
