Disturbed by the high rate of accidents on Nigerian roads, the Senate yesterday urged all relevant agencies of government especially the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police to rise up to their responsibilities in checking the state of vehicles, drivers, roads as well as motor parks to reduce road accidents.
The resolution is sequel to a motion sponsored by senator Ali Wakili (Bauchi South) on the pandemic rise of road traffic accidents.
The senate had condemned the high rate of accidents in Nigerian roads in recent times which have claimed scores of lives.
Senate however, advised Federal Ministry of Works, power and Housing (FMWPH) and Federal Roads maintenance Agency (FERMA) to monitor the states of the roads as they are poorly constructed, managed and in deplorable conditions.?
It also called on the Federal Ministry of works , FERMA and state governments to check rampant construction of unauthorised bumps and speed barriers that constitute accident.
Senate further urged the National Orientation agency (NOA) , civil society organisation and religious clerics to sensitize Nigerians on their responsibility to their lives.
Meanwhile , senate observed one minute silence in memory of those who lost their lives last Sunday along Bauchi/ Jos road.
