The Ebonyi State Police Command on Tuesday said that men of the command following a tip off rescued a businessman that was abducted at the Umuoghara quarry site in Ezza North Local Government Area of the State by unknown gunmen at the weekend.
In a chat with newsmen in Abakaliki, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP George Okafor said the kidnap gang who wore Police uniforms had invaded the victim’s shop at the quarry site, pretended to be looking for someone and immediately they spotted the victim, they abducted him and zoomed off.
According to ASP George Okafor, the hoodlums after abducting their victim whom the PPRO could not disclose his name demanded a ransom of N30million.
‘’The hoodlums kept the victim in a hideout in Umuoghara and demanded N30m ransom which they later reduced”.
‘’The ransom was taken to where the kidnappers said it should be dropped but before then a team of mobile policemen and Special Anti-Robbery Squad SARS had already cordoned off the place.
‘’Immediately the hoodlums came to pick the money, the police opened fire on them and killed one of them and the victim was rescued unhurt”.
The PPRO further noted that one of the policemen who engaged the kidnappers in gun duel sustained several injuries during the shoot-out and is currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.
Okafor said the place where the victim was kept is one of the hideouts used by kidnappers in the State.
