Gunmen Attack Rivers Police Station, Free Detainees, Kill Eleven Villagers

Rampaging gunmen suspected to be cultists have attacked a police station at Rumuji community in Emohua Local Government area of Rivers State.

The gunmen were reported to have during the unprecedented attack, shot at the officers on duty and broke the police cell, allowing all the detainees to escape.

The number of the escaped detainees is yet to be ascertained.

In another development, over eleven people have been killed in cult clashes in Ovogu, Rumuewhuo and Rumuji communities in Emohua Local government area of the State.

It was gathered that nine people were shot dead in Ovogo community, two in Rumuji and two others in Rumuewuo communities.

A source close to Ovogo community who confirmed the incident to newsmen alleged that suspected Icland cult group invaded the community, shooting indiscriminately to scare the people.

He added that residents of Ovogo community woke-up Sunday morning and saw corpses littering the community.

According to the source, “The boys notified the police about the attack but they thought it was a joke. They stormed the station and all the officers ran away. Those boys went to open the cell and allowed everybody to escape. They even carted away all their weapons.

“After that, they entered into my community, Rumuji and just started shooting anyhow. I later heard they entered Ovogo and Rumuewhuo and killed people there too. We need help here.”

In the meantime, it was gathered that the entire Ovogo and Rumuji have been deserted.
