Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu Dogara, says Nigeria must quickly address plight of the over two million Internally Displaced Persons in the country.
Speaking during a meeting with a delegation from the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR) in the National Assembly, the Speaker revealed that the security challenges confronting the north eastern part of the nation must be resolved.
The leader of the UN delegation urged the Speaker to expedite action on the domestication and ratification of the UN convention on the protection of the rights of refugees.
Dogara said the House of Representatives is putting legislative structures in place to ensure that the rights of the displaced persons are protected at all times and Nigeria domesticates and ratifies the UN treaty on the rights of refugees.
The issues of IDPs is mainly as a result of the security situation confronting the north eastern part of Nigeria.
