Bus Driver Docked For Crushing Law Student

A school bus driver, Rasaq Waheed has been arraigned before an Osun State Magistrate Court sitting in Osogbo for allegedly crushing a 200-level law student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Miss Mary Ibitolu.

Waheed was said to have crushed the young undergraduate to death on May 16, 2015 along Osogbo Grammar School area of the state capital.

The charge sheet stated that Waheed drove a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number XB 113 SD on the highway in a dangerous manner and knocked Ibitolu off the motorcycle she boarded.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Fagboyinbo Abiodun told the court that Waheed hit two other people, Samuel Olasunkanmi and Abimbola Kazeem, who also sustained injuries.

The prosecution said the accused person drove carelessly without regard to traffic rules, adding that the bus lacked an efficient brake while the driver was driving without license. The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him while his counsel, Mr. Bola Abimbola, sought for his bail in liberal terms with assurance that Waheed would provide credible sureties and would not abscond.

The presiding magistrate Olusola Aluko granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Aluko ordered that the case file be forwarded to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice as he adjourned the case till 18th September, 2015 for mention.
