Mr Ibrahim Atakunya, the District Head of Rije Community in Kuje Area Council of FCT, has appealed to the Federal Government to provide fertiliser and other farm inputs to farmers to boost food production in the area.
Atakunya made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kuje on Friday.
He noted that the distribution of agricultural inputs to farmers by the government under the Growth Enhancement Scheme (GES) had contributed to high yields.
The traditional ruler, therefore, urged the government to renew its agricultural policy geared toward supporting farmers to achieve national food security.
“Fertilisers are not frequently supplied as before; government used to assist a lot, but today it is not available to even buy.
“The soil in Kuje is fertile; but we need fertiliser so that we can boost the production of crops on our farms,” he said.
He described Kuje as the food basket of the FCT, but the farmers lacked inputs to boost food production.
Atakunya said: “Farmers always need fertilisers because it contains plant nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
“The advantages that can be derived from fertilisers include the maintenance of soil fertility which will enable farmers to grow nutritious crops.
“I am appealing to the Federal Government to supply us with fertiliser and other inputs; every farmer has to be empowered to ensure good agricultural production.” (NAN)
