Some Nigerians resident in South Africa on Monday in Pretoria commended the National U-20 team, the Flying Eagles, for winning their Sudanese counterparts 2-1 , in a qualifying match for Africa U-20 Championship.
Zambia will host the Championship in 2017.
Emeka Ezinteje, Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Union, South Africa, said that the Flying Eagles deserved to be praised for the away victory in Sudan.
“The players deserve our praise for achieving this feat away from home. I remember, they also beat Burundi away in their first match.
“ It shows that the team is focused and dedicated. From all indications, they have shown character and zeal to excel and I know that they will do the country proud,” he said.
Blessing Anya Hutchinson, Financial Secretary, Nigeria Union, KwaZulu- Natal Province, said the team had shown determination to consolidate on their achievements from the U-17 level.
She said the decision of the Nigeria Football Federation to keep the U-17 World cup team together was a step in the right direction.
“ The continuity has paid off and we are seeing the results. We wish the team good luck in all their outings,” she said.
Kennedy Osagie, Chairman, Nigeria Union, Northern Cape Province, said Coach Emmanuel Amuneke had shown that he was a good tactician, capable of bringing out the best in any team.
“ I have followed the present U-20 team during their outings as the National U-17 team. They have not disappointed me and I have this feeling that they will go places in future tournaments.
“ I urge the NFF to keep them together after their campaigns in the U-20 category for the 2018 World Cup,” he said.
Trust Owoyele, Vice Chairman, Nigeria Union, Gauteng Province, commended the team and urged them not to underrate the Sudanese in the second leg.
“ This is a qualifying match for an African Nations tournament and it is the desire of all countries to be there. Having won away, I urge the team to play the return match as if they did not win away.
“ Nigerians in South Africa are proud of them and we have every reason to be happy with their outings so far,” he said.
Chicaodili Nwanedo, Chairman, North West Province of the Union also praised the Flying Eagles for their away victory.
He said that Nigeria was blessed with abundant stars capable of going places if properly harnessed.
“ The present U-20 team has really shown determination and zeal to go places. I urge their handlers to remain focused in their assignments.
“ I believe the team will qualify and do well in Zambia. I am also of the opinion that this is another dream team, having conquered the world at the U-17 level and still intact as a team,” he said.
