A 38-year-old taxi driver, identified as Muritala Olugunju, has been arrested in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, by operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team, SIRT, for robbing his passenger of the sum of N1.8 million.
The passenger, identified only as Mohammed was said to have requested the services of Olugunju on his visit to Abuja.
Olugunju reportedly picked Mohammed up at Wuse Zone 6 area of Abuja for shopping, from where he drove him to the hotel where he wanted to lodge but unknown to Mohammed that he was being watched by his taxi driver, he entered the hotel to book a room, leaving his belongings which allegedly included a bag containing the sum of N1.8 million in the taxi.
Olugunju reportedly absconded with his victim’s bags before he (Mohammed) came out of the hotel.
Immediately, Mohammed was said to have alerted the IRT upon his discovery.
The police was said to have trailed the suspect and he was arrested a few weeks later.
The suspect, speaking with newsmen, blamed the devil for pushing him into stealing.
He said, “I suspected Mohammed was carrying cash because I had been monitoring him in the course of our trip and noticed that he did not once visit the bank nor use an ATM.”
On how he spent the money, Olagunju said, “I gave N200, 000 to my girlfriend and I also gave my sister N80, 000.
“Then I bought a car for myself which I intended to use for my business, but before I knew what was happening, I was arrested.
“I regret doing this and I hope my passenger will forgive me,” the suspect pleaded, adding that the devil pushed him to commit the crime.”
The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Anjuguri Manzah who confirmed the incident, said the suspect will be made to face the law.
