An Islamic Scholar, Sheik Ahmed Lemu, has lauded the efforts of President Muhammad Buhari so far in combating insurgency even as a Don with the University of Maiduguri, Dr Umarah Ibrahim Muhammad, said activities of insurgents in the country in future should be checked through regulation of Islamic preaching centres
The scholars spoke over the weekend at a two- day opinion leaders’ seminar held at the Da’awah Institute of Nigeria Islamic Education Trust (IET) in Minna on “Preventing the next Boko Haram and its Ideological Expansion”
Sheik Lemu who also sought for solution to the challenges faced by Almajiri system of education in the northern parts of the country, stated that the efforts of the present administration in Nigeria is on the right path.
The Islamic scholar who is the founder of the Islamic Education Trust therefore urged the opinion leaders at the seminar to use the opportunity to find a solution to the problems and challenges of Almajirai in the country, adding that the effort of the government so far is commendable.
Also in his presentation, the lecturer from the University of Maiduguri, Dr Umarah Muhammad in his lecture titled, “Ideological Expansion of the Boko Haram Sect in Nigeria”, suggested that a policy should be put in place to ensure that Islamic centres are cleared by the government and make sure that only certified preachers should be allowed to preach.
While suggesting that there should be change in attitude of aspiring religious scholars to have other businesses rather than relying on commercialisation of religion, he also called for a proper forum for interfaith dialogue.
According to him, “there must be severe punishment for any sermon or fatwa that were either unauthorized or that is based on inciting one against the other. However, government should try to respond to the yearning and aspirations of the citizenry”.
